New Corvette finally coming to OZ

The iconic Chevrolet Corvette is coming to Australian showrooms for the first time in its 60 year history.

After promising for decades, General Motors will finally build a right-hand-drive version of its all-new 2013 Vette, unveiled in Detroit today.

But don’t break out your cheque books just yet. The new car, which GM has adorned with the iconic ‘Stingray’ badge, won’t be on Australian roads for “a few years” according to GM CEO Dan Akerson.

Still, the new car looks like it’s worth the wait. A new Corvette appears once every 10 years, with GM keen to make this new model a truly global car. Revealed to the press at the Detroit Motor Show, the 2013 Corvette is the seventh generation of the famous sportscar.

Faster, lighter and longer than its predecessors, the new Corvette packs a huge, all-new 6.2-litre V8 engine which now features direct injection and variable valve timing, plus a new seven-speed gearbox that pre-empts the correct revs for quicker changes.

As always, power is huge, with the Vette’s 335kW making it the most powerful standard Corvette in history. 0-100km/h is dealt with in less than 4.0 seconds. It’s not all big engine and big power, though. A carbonfibre roof reduces weight while an active fuel management system provides improved fuel economy by shutting off four cylinders in certain situations. The steering too has changed, with the new rack said to be 500 percent stiffer.

And as for money? GM hasn’t revealed pricing of the new car, but said it would be in the range of the current Corvette, which retails at $50,000 USD for the base model. Expect to pay at least double that in Australia.

I have a feeling it will be closer to what the GTR sells for, or what the famousW427 did, at "new vette downunder", ignorant comment on HSV being just a chipped taxi, just proves it, a different motor is a bit more than a new ECU, completely different gear and diff ratio's, different interior, suspension. the list goes on, try look past what its donor car is, You wouldnt call a AMG a taxi, Even though there cheaper Merc version are predominantly used as Taxi's in Europe,
Why would it be double double the price. RHD is engineered in the factory doesnt cost any more than LHD. Transport on the drive onoff car ships would only be about $1500.00 per car. The Oz taxes are the expense. The SRT Chrysler 300 sells for $66K here, in the US its BASE price is $45K USD. Our cars are more upspec, I believe. Tho they are doing a Stripper model just for oz eg no heated mirrorsseats other rubbish we dont need in this warm country, and it will be even cheaper. HSV has always been too expensive...This corvette should sell here for around $80K, Remember the New mustang will be here in 2015 too, much cheaper than before.
A bold design and move by Chevy.. surely by the time it gets here it'll cost a bazillion dollars. Those dumbed down Camaro tail lamps still haven't grown on me.. do like the fancy and now-it-can match-the-exterior cabin.
At least double, try tripple!. Rember when the Mustang came to Australia, over 100k, they sold in the USA for just over 30k at the time. THis car is a cut above a HSV and will be priced so. They are not your ordinalry Chev, they a USA premium car.
At $100k plus for a two door with only 335kw why bother we can buy local same power at half the cost.
lol Expect to pay at least double that in Australia which would be 100k AUS. holden already charge 80k plus for a commodore taxi with a bodykit wheels chip and a hsv badge and call that a sports car. 100k for a real sports car thats not a re-badged family commuter taxi that has 2013 technology im thinking it will cost a lot more than 100kAUS and it will outsell like the toyota 86. please bring it quicker. point to note nissan are selling gtr's for 180kAU downunder for a while now and there genuine sports cars not re-badged family sedans
